We Love It When a Plan Comes Together…
There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing a carefully crafted itinerary unfold perfectly - especially when it takes travellers through some of North America’s most spectacular landscapes.
John recently had the pleasure of designing this unforgettable journey for a lovely couple who have just returned from an adventure through the USA, Canada and Alaska.
Using their own air miles voucher for international flights, they booked the airfare themselves before handing the rest over to John. From that point on, the magic began.
Seattle: The Perfect Starting Point
Their adventure started in Seattle, where they spent two nights discovering the vibrant energy of the Emerald City.
Nestled between Lake Washington and Puget Sound, Seattle is renowned for its thriving technology scene, iconic coffee culture and stunning natural surroundings. With its waterfront setting, bustling downtown and easy access to the outdoors, it’s an ideal introduction to the Pacific Northwest.
For their stay, they checked into The Westin Seattle, enjoying sweeping city and water views from this perfectly positioned downtown hotel.
Vancouver Island: Canadian Charm and Coastal Beauty
Next came a scenic three-hour ferry journey across to Vancouver Island, where they spent three wonderful nights immersed in some of British Columbia’s most beautiful landscapes.
Known for its rugged coastline, temperate rainforests, whale watching, hiking trails and laid-back outdoor lifestyle, Vancouver Island offers the very best of Canada’s west coast.
Their base was Victoria, British Columbia’s charming capital city. Famous for its British colonial heritage, picturesque Inner Harbour, beautiful gardens and traditional afternoon teas, Victoria is one of Canada’s most delightful destinations.
A particular highlight was a visit to the world-famous Butchart Gardens, where they spent several glorious hours exploring the spectacular floral displays.
Their accommodation, the Hotel Grand Pacific, offered the perfect waterfront location from which to explore the city.
All Aboard for Alaska
From Victoria, they travelled to Vancouver, where the next chapter of their adventure began: a seven-night Regent Seven Seas cruise to Alaska aboard the magnificent Seven Seas Explorer.
The “Wild Frontier Adventure” itinerary proved to be the perfect fit and ultimately became the standout experience of the entire trip.
Sailing north from Vancouver to Whittier, Alaska, the voyage began with a breathtaking journey through the Inside Passage - one of the world’s most scenic coastal routes.
Ketchikan: Alaska’s First Welcome
Their first Alaskan port of call was Ketchikan, often known as the “Salmon Capital of the World.”
Rich in Native Alaskan culture, Ketchikan is home to one of the finest collections of totem poles in Alaska, offering fascinating insight into the region’s indigenous heritage. Surrounded by dense forests and dramatic waterways, it provided a memorable introduction to Alaska.
Juneau: Beauty Beyond Compare
The cruise continued to Juneau, Alaska’s picturesque capital city.
Accessible only by air or sea, Juneau has been captivating visitors since the late 19th century. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers and pristine wilderness, it combines natural beauty with fascinating frontier history.
Skagway: Following the Gold Rush Trail
Next came Skagway, the legendary gateway to the Klondike Gold Rush.
More than 40,000 hopeful prospectors passed through this frontier town during the gold rush of 1897, and today its beautifully preserved historic buildings offer a glimpse into that remarkable era.
One of the highlights here was a journey aboard the famous White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. Climbing nearly 3,000 feet into the mountains, the route passes dramatic waterfalls, deep gorges and breathtaking alpine scenery, including Bridal Veil Falls and Inspiration Point.
Icy Strait Point: Into the Alaskan Wilderness
As the cruise ventured further north, the scenery became increasingly wild and remote.
At Icy Strait Point near Hoonah, towering forests, abundant wildlife and vast wilderness create the quintessential Alaskan experience.
Here, travellers can learn about the rich traditions of the Tlingit people through cultural performances, enjoy fresh Alaskan seafood, take the gondola up Hoonah Mountain for panoramic views, and explore the surrounding landscapes in search of wildlife.
One memorable excursion took our couple deep into the remote Spasski River Valley, where they enjoyed the chance to spot grizzly bears from a raised observation platform.
Hubbard Glacier: Nature’s Grand Spectacle
Without question, one of the most awe-inspiring moments of the cruise was sailing alongside Hubbard Glacier.
Known as North America’s largest tidewater glacier, Hubbard stretches an astonishing 76 miles in length and spans seven miles across. Unlike many glaciers around the world, it continues to advance, making it famous for its dramatic calving events, where enormous chunks of ice break away with a thunderous roar.
Watching this incredible natural phenomenon unfold from the ship was an experience they’ll never forget.
Whittier and Prince William Sound
As the cruise approached its final destination of Whittier, binoculars were never far from reach.
This remarkable region is home to seals, sea otters, whales and some of Alaska’s most stunning coastal scenery. Often considered the gateway to Prince William Sound, Whittier offers exceptional opportunities for glacier cruises, kayaking and wildlife encounters, along with fascinating World War II history.
Throughout the voyage, the ever-changing coastline became increasingly dramatic, with snow-capped peaks, glaciers and pristine wilderness providing a spectacular backdrop.
The Regent Seven Seas Difference
One of the reasons Regent Seven Seas remains such a popular choice is the extraordinary range of inclusions, allowing guests to simply relax and enjoy the journey.
Highlights include:
• Exquisite dining, including speciality restaurants at no additional cost
• Unlimited beverages, premium wines, cocktails and speciality coffees
• Personalised in-suite mini bar replenished daily
• Unlimited access to spa facilities
• Pre-paid gratuities
• Unlimited Wi-Fi
• Valet laundry service
• 24-hour in-suite dining
• Included shore excursions
San Francisco: The Grand Finale
Following disembarkation in Whittier and a short transfer to Anchorage, it was time for the final destination: San Francisco.
Spending three nights in one of California’s most iconic cities provided the perfect ending to an already remarkable adventure.
Famous for its rolling hills, Victorian architecture, diverse neighbourhoods and world-renowned landmarks, San Francisco offers endless opportunities for exploration. From spectacular bay views to its thriving food scene and booming technology sector, there’s always something new to discover.
A Journey Tailor-Made
After two unforgettable weeks exploring the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and California, a short flight back to Seattle connected them with their return journey home to London.
Every element of this itinerary was carefully tailored by John to suit the clients’ interests, timescales and travel preferences.
It’s worth remembering that even if you’ve already secured your flights using air miles, loyalty points or American Express vouchers, we can still arrange every aspect of your journey on the ground - from hotels and transfers to cruises, tours and bespoke experiences.
Of course, we can also arrange flights and would often recommend an “open-jaw” itinerary for a trip like this, flying into Seattle and home from San Francisco to maximise both time and convenience.
If you’re dreaming about your next adventure, we’d love to help bring it to life.
