Portugal and the early days of Janaway Travel

Janaway Travel was founded in 1960 by Mr Janaway and his business partner, Mr Arnull, at a time when overseas holidays were becoming an exciting possibility for more and more British families.

Just four years later, in 1964, the company began organising holidays to Portugal, arranging flights, airport transfers and accommodation in some of the country's finest hotels and villas. It marked the beginning of a relationship with Portugal that would continue for decades and become one of the company's greatest success stories.

Looking back at the original holiday brochures today offers a fascinating glimpse into another era. The prices are enough to make modern travellers do a double take – a two-week holiday in Portugal could cost little more than the price of a modest meal today. It is a reminder of how much travel has changed and how pioneering those early package holidays really were.

Portugal itself has always held a special appeal for British holidaymakers. In the north lies Porto, the hardworking city on the banks of the Douro River, famous throughout the world for its port wine. Visitors are captivated by its historic waterfront, colourful houses and the magnificent bridges that span the river and connect the city with Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank.

Further south is Lisbon, Portugal's beautiful capital city and one of Europe's most charming destinations. Built across seven hills overlooking the River Tagus, Lisbon combines history, culture and atmosphere in a way few cities can match. From its historic trams and grand squares to its cafés and viewpoints, it has long enchanted visitors from around the world.

Continuing south brings travellers to the Algarve, Portugal's famous holiday playground. Renowned for its spectacular coastline, golden sandy beaches and world-class golf courses, the region has attracted visitors for generations. Its excellent hotels, relaxed atmosphere and year-round sunshine continue to make it one of Europe's favourite holiday destinations.

Yet some of Portugal's finest experiences can be found away from the most popular resorts. Faro, often bypassed by visitors making their way to beach hotels, rewards those who take the time to explore its historic streets, marina and old town. It is a city full of character and well worth escaping the swimming pool for an afternoon of discovery.

At the far south-western tip of mainland Europe lies Sagres, a place of dramatic cliffs, powerful Atlantic waves and breathtaking views. Historically linked with Portugal's great age of exploration, it remains one of the country's most atmospheric destinations.

No visit to the Algarve would be complete without mentioning Lagos, with its attractive harbour, cobbled streets and beautiful old town adorned with traditional Portuguese tiles. Its blend of history, culture and seaside charm has made it a favourite with visitors for decades.

Portugal has been part of the Janaway Travel story almost from the very beginning. More than sixty years after those first holidays were arranged, it remains one of the destinations closest to the company's heart and continues to create unforgettable memories for new generations of travellers.
