Gran Hotel Taoro, Northern Tenerife – A grand return

Having worked in the travel industry for many years, being invited to experience a new or refurbished hotel and share my honest opinion is not only one of the perks of my job but also a genuine privilege and honour.

I was recently invited to stay at the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de La Cruz and what a wonderful experience it was.

Originally opened in 1890, Gran Hotel Taoro was Spain’s very first luxury hotel, welcoming celebrities, royalty and dignitaries from around the world. After remaining closed for many years, this iconic property finally reopened in May 2025, beautifully restored while retaining the elegance and grandeur of its historic past, with a modern twist here and there.

The hotel now offers 199 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, two heated swimming pools and a smaller paddling pool for younger children. From the moment you arrive, the colonial-style architecture makes an immediate impression. The carefully restored façade, surrounded by mature trees and lush tropical planting, perfectly captures the charm and character of the original building. Before you've even stepped inside, you know you're somewhere rather special.

The grand reception area is both elegant and welcoming, with a stylish bar at the far end providing a relaxed place to enjoy a drink throughout the day or evening. Outside, the grounds are exceptionally spacious, with beautifully landscaped gardens creating a peaceful atmosphere. Guests can choose from three restaurants, along with a poolside bar and restaurant, ensuring there's plenty of variety during your stay.

During my visit, I dined at both Amular and Oko, and each offered a memorable culinary experience. The flavours were exceptional, the presentation creative and imaginative, and the portions generous without being overwhelming. The attention to detail from the chefs was evident in every course.

The pool area is another highlight of the hotel. There are ample sun loungers, so finding a peaceful spot is never a problem, and the surrounding views provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing day in the Tenerife sunshine.

The hotel will appeal to couples, solo travellers and families with younger children. There isn't a kids' club, so it lends itself more to relaxed family holidays rather than action-packed entertainment. Lazy days by the pool, a stroll through the beautiful park opposite the hotel, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings are all part of its charm.

I also have to mention the excellent spa, offering a range of massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, along with a hair salon – the perfect place to indulge in a little extra pampering during your stay.
