If you’ve only experienced the south of Tenerife, then it’s time to discover a completely different side of the island. The north is greener, more traditional and full of character, with beautiful scenery, historic towns and a wonderfully relaxed way of life.
For me, Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect place to stay. It has all the facilities you could want, yet still feels authentically Canarian. Spend time wandering through the cobbled streets of the old town, browse the independent shops, or simply find a café in Plaza del Charco and watch local life unfold. There’s no rush here – it’s a place to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Take a stroll along the seafront to the beautiful Lago Martiánez seawater pools, explore the botanical gardens or simply wander without a plan. Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones you weren’t looking for.
As evening falls, the newer part of Puerto de la Cruz comes alive with an excellent choice of restaurants, bars and cafés. Whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood, sampling local wines or simply sitting by the water’s edge watching the sun set over the Atlantic, it’s a wonderful way to end the day.
Just a short drive away are three of Northern Tenerife’s most charming towns.
La Orotava is full of beautiful colonial houses, carved wooden balconies and colourful gardens. Take your time exploring the cobbled streets before stopping for lunch in one of the many traditional restaurants.
Icod de los Vinos is best known for its ancient Dragon Tree, but there’s much more to discover. Wander through the peaceful town, enjoy a glass of locally produced wine and soak up the relaxed atmosphere.
Garachico is one of Tenerife’s true gems. Rebuilt after a volcanic eruption, its historic streets, natural lava pools and picturesque harbour make it the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon.
Northern Tenerife isn’t about rushing from one attraction to the next. It’s about discovering hidden corners, enjoying long lunches, meeting friendly locals and taking time to appreciate the island’s rich history and spectacular scenery.
If you’re looking for an authentic Tenerife experience, away from the busier resorts, Puerto de la Cruz is the perfect base - and somewhere I would happily return to time and time again.
Jane would love to chat more about her adventure to Northern Tenerife so do get in touch.
